MPA STUDENTS DIRECTLY IMPACTING WEST VIRGINIA COMMUNITIES

MPA students are partnering with a community group in Fayette County to help attract distance-earning opportunities to the area. Since Spring 2011, MPA students have conducted a survey of community capacity and interest to participate in internet-enabled job opportunities and administered a community skills assessment initiative. This project which is in part funded by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation through the Campus-Community LINK grant, provides an opportunity for MPA students to have a direct impact on West Virgina communities while gaining valuable experience in the public sector. For more information about this project contact Dr. Maja Holmes.

NSF GRANT AWARDED TO DR. ADAM HENRY

Professor Adam Douglas Henry, PhD was recently awarded a research grant from the National Science Foundation’s Decision, Risk, and Management Sciences (NSF DRMS) program. This $200,000 grant will fund a study of how scientists and decision-makers working in environmental risk (“risk professionals”) collaborate with one another to better understand complex issues of sustainability and craft appropriate policy responses. Coupled with data from a prior study of the same policy system, this research will allow us to observe the factors that have driven the growth and evolution of this network over time. Ultimately, this research is aimed at developing a better understanding of how government agencies, interest groups, and other organizations in the policy process can work together to improve the effective use of science in environmental decision-making. This grant will also provide funding for two WVU graduate students (for two years each) to work on these issues.
