Kevin Gillen, JD

In addition to teaching this class, I am an Attorney-Advisor for the Department of Labor, Benefits Review Board.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1993-1998, I opened and operated a small courier/delivery business in the Washington, DC area. After several years as a small business owner, I closed my business and went back to school. I received an Associate’s Degree in 2006 from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. I went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2008 and from West Virginia University College of Law in 2011.

Since graduating from law school, I have been practicing law here in West Virginia. I have represented coal mine operators in federal black lung disability claims before the Department of Labor. After that, I represented employers in various employment discrimination and wrongful termination cases in an insurance defense litigation practice. I then switched sides and became a plaintiff's attorney representing clients in personal injury cases, including numerous employment injury cases. I also clerked for the Honorable Christopher J. McCarthy in Harrison County Circuit Court and served as an Adjunct Instructor at the Veterans Law Clinic at the West Virginia University College of Law.

As noted above, I am now an Attorney-Advisor with the Office of General Counsel at the Benefits Review Board, an administrative adjudicatory body that hears appeals of both Black Lung Disability Act and Longshore and Harbor Workers Act cases.
